Hi everyone. This has been an extra hard two weeks! I've been scouring closets and making a huge mess. I've been trying to gather up all of Miss Abigail's hope chest to take it to Arizona where Abigail and Jacob will live for the next couple of years. Abigail is getting married on Saturday! I can't wait. But it has been so emotional for me to see this project come to an end.

Actually, it may not end, haha. I am going to throw away all my kitchen towels and make new ones for myself. And new bath towels! And maybe a quilt for our bed. So there are still some posts planned for the future, but I'm not sure where I will go with the blog. We will have to see. I certainly have had a lot of thoughts about hope chests and am still excited to discuss the subject.

But...here is a picture of the pile of stuff. The actual hope chest is on the other side of the room, waiting to go into the back of the truck, but you can still see the auxiliary hope "chest of drawers." There is the stuff from her closet too and from under the bed, haha. She will have some sorting to do. What an exciting time - the culmination of an 18 year project!
Miss Abigail was born into a homeschooling family. Not all homeschoolers plan to go to college, but that was always the possible plan. When you are a homeschool mom, you hope your children can get into college and manage to keep up. You hope that you could do at least an adequate job and I just crossed my fingers that it would be enough. My last little chick proved she could do it. That makes four out of four! Hooray! Abby had to work pretty hard to make up for my deficiencies and I am just as proud as I can be of her accomplishments. Now on to nursing school.

We observed her "virtual" commencement ceremony last night - her name was flashed on a screen! But here is a beautiful picture and I love that wide smile!
This lovely hand-crocheted tablecloth is a gift for Miss Abigail from Jackie Mitchell, another older friend to Abby from our ladies club. Jackie was a close neighbor for many years before she moved to Oklahoma and this extraordinary gift came in the mail soon after she moved. Jackie wanted Abigail to have something from her in the hope chest. What a wonderful friend.

The tablecloth is large - about 60-inches, so it will work on a regular round dining table or as an accent topper on a smaller table. I love the ornamental pineapple motif - symbolic of hospitality!
I finished this neutral colored table runner to use for simple everyday meals and it would look great under an easy buffet meal on the kitchen counter. I love these napkins! DII French Stripe Chambray - set of six. I ordered them online and I'm very pleased that they match the blue and white tablecloth so well. Blue colors can be so variable and I was taking a chance on a match. They will also coordinate with a neutral tan table runner that I am still working on. I'm crocheting a lace trim on both ends, so that may take me another day or two to finish. I ordered these napkins from Zola.com and I am pretty happy with the quality. The weighty fabric has a generous hem and a mitered corner that will hold up well to fancy folds! I washed the napkins and there was very little dye run, so these are now ready for Miss Abigail to use everyday.
This morning I finished these six very simple blue and white paisley cloth napkins. The fabric matches the blue and white tablecloth and the set will look pretty with Miss Abigail's classic white Corel dishes. I just cut the fabric to size (18-inches square) and made a turned hem. The finished size is 15-inches square.

When money is plenty this is a man's world. When money is scarce it is a woman's world. When all else seems to have failed, the woman's instinct comes in. She gets the job. That is the reason why, in spite of all that happens, we continue to have a world. - Ladies Home Journal, Oct 1932

I wonder if you agree with this quote. Of course things have changed enormously since 1932 and I am watching my children as they share responsibilities within their marriages. Each is a partner to the other and their individual contributions are enormous. I do think though that some women have an instinct when it comes to creating a home on a strict budget. It might have been learned however. I wonder if this instinct still survives.

Economists in the news are predicting a new, frugal future for many Americans. In 2008, during the last major recession, many Americans were fearful that economic conditions would linger and a wave of thriftiness made discount chain stores, thrift stores and dollar stores way more popular than they had been previously. This frugality has continued and, in recent years, there is a resurgence in learning homemaking skills including mending, of all things. Craft channels and cooking channels on YouTube flourish. Young women, particularly, have learned how to sew and embroider, cook and make their own cleaning products and entertain more at home.

Teaching Miss Abigail homemaking skills has been a big part of what I have called the "hidden hope chest." When I look at the list of skills I created many years ago (which you can see if you scroll down the sidebar) I'm pleased at how accomplished she has become in all of these topics. She is honestly an amazing young woman. Yes, I admit to being completely biased. We worked at this for so long and some skills have necessarily been put aside when she left home to focus on other priorities. But I can see that she continues to learn new things that will bless her family in the years to come. For instance, this semester she enrolled in both a musical conducting course and an emergency first aid course and was chatting to me recently about what she was learning. Sadly, she won't receive credit for the first aid course as the hands-on aspect could not continue when the classes shut down, but much of the knowledge is in her hands now. I'm grateful for that.

The current pandemic has already revealed both the weaknesses in our personal preparation for at home stability and the strength of our ability to be creative and frugal. Let's hope we all have the traditional instinct to create a comforting home in spite of loss and struggle.
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "palatino" , "palatino linotype" , "palatino lt std" , "book antiqua" , "georgia" , serif;">

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "palatino" , "palatino linotype" , "palatino lt std" , "book antiqua" , "georgia" , serif;">Cloth napkins are one of life's little luxuries, like a pretty placemat or a tablecloth on a bare table. I want Miss Abigail to have at least a few cloth napkins in her hope chest. Many people don't take the trouble to dress the table for everyday. Holidays, birthdays and recognizing special milestones are usually an occasion for setting a special table, but everyday meals are overlooked most of the time. But I would like to argue that even the most humble of dinners can be made a little more special by using a pretty cloth napkin.
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "palatino" , "palatino linotype" , "palatino lt std" , "book antiqua" , "georgia" , serif;">

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "palatino" , "palatino linotype" , "palatino lt std" , "book antiqua" , "georgia" , serif;">Cloth napkins were used regularly until the middle of the last century when paper napkins, which require no washing or ironing, became more popular. It was and is an affordable convenience and, like so many other things, it saved time. Most people now don't own cloth napkins, though some are using cloth napkins as a more ecological choice. But many people don't use any napkins at all. Many eat on the go or at the kitchen counter, and it's just too easy to reach for the paper towels if a napkin is necessary.
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "palatino" , "palatino linotype" , "palatino lt std" , "book antiqua" , "georgia" , serif;">

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "palatino" , "palatino linotype" , "palatino lt std" , "book antiqua" , "georgia" , serif;">It's actually pretty easy to collect and use cloth napkins, especially if you liberate yourself from the traditional fussiness of using them. The notion that they belong at a fancy dinner party or that your grandmother would be shocked at the stains or wrinkles honestly need not apply in our day and time. <span style="background-color: white; font-family: "palatino" , "palatino linotype" , "palatino lt std" , "book antiqua" , "georgia" , serif;">Bright patterns or dark colors can hide the stains and i<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "palatino" , "palatino linotype" , "palatino lt std" , "book antiqua" , "georgia" , serif;">roning just reinforces the fussiness belief. Choose an soft, aged fabric and leave them rumpled. This has a casual appeal that is just right for an everyday meal. Have enough that you can just add them to your regular laundry. <span style="background-color: white; font-family: "palatino" , "palatino linotype" , "palatino lt std" , "book antiqua" , "georgia" , serif;">I would like to assert that when we come together for a meal, a cloth napkin can elevate that time and make it more special. It doesn't have to seem fancy or be uncomfortable. It's just a little thing that can create a bigger moment and make life a little more beautiful.

Miss Abigail and I were talking not too long ago about what types of table linens she might want from her hope chest. She thought a table runner to lay on the kitchen counter under trays for snacks would be helpful. So I made this easy self-faced table centerpiece this morning. I didn't have enough fabric length for a runner, so this is a little wider and a bit shorter - more of a centerpiece than a runner. It is still roomy for the purpose. It measures 19 x 27 - inches.

Abigail and Jacob are both very musical, so the fabric should reflect their interests and the black and white colors make it easy to coordinate dishes and other decorations at a casual get-together.

There are many directions and tutorials for creating a self-faced, mitered corner placemat or baby blankets or quilt. I find the directions for a baby blanket from the Utah State Cooperative Extension the easiest to understand and complete. I used that PDF to make this centerpiece, just changing the measurements to fit well on a kitchen counter. If you have another great pattern, please share the link in a comment!

Miss Abigail loves a party! She has always loved socializing with people and that often involves food. I know she will want to host casual get-togethers with friends and have another couple over for dinner occasionally. So I've been thinking about what she might need in her linen closet to plan for a special occasion. I've been thinking about a game night or a movie night or a casual picnic at the trail head - even snacks for finals week.

I mentioned before that I had not created many table linens for the hope chest because we didn't know very early in this process what her dishes would look like. But now we do, so the gap in table linens looms large in the unfinished projects category.

I thought these small place mats might work for an easy winter soup party or a summer pasta party, a mini salad bar potluck or snacks for a game night. They don't take up much room at the table, but they still give a bit of a finished look. I made four, thinking she might be hosting a second couple for dinner or a couple of girlfriends in a study group. A tablecloth would be an easier choice if there is a larger crowd around the table.

I began with my pattern for the simple granny round dishcloth, but changed the pattern to make it larger with an additional row. Here is the new pattern if you want to make these mats for yourself. I will post a photo tutorial tomorrow for those who might need some visual help. I will remind everyone of the copyright notice in the sidebar and ask that you don't sell or steal this pattern. Thanks!
When Miss Abigail graduated from homeschool and began college my sweet sister sent her a gift for the hope chest, this pretty embroidered linen table runner. I honestly love that Abby has so many gifts in her hope chest.

While I don't have all her gifts photographed yet, I decided to create a label to organize these "gifts to Abby", so that we both can remember the many women who have contributed lovely things for her future home.

I love hand embroidery. It's very relaxing to me! The tips of my fingers do suffer from the pricks of the needle, however. I guess you just have to put up with that in order to produce such a lovely result.
This set of pillowcases in the hope chest is recycled! Some years ago, my father-in-law gave me several pillowcases that were cleaned out of an old warehouse where he worked. They are made from beautiful, tight cotton percale and the fabric is lovely. But, these original pillowcases had a large black logo stamp on the cuff - not so lovely. So, I cut the whole hem off to get rid of that logo. Because that made the pillowcases too short for even a standard pillow, I made a new cuff with this pretty blue print cotton fabric. I used the easy "magic" or "burrito" method to enclose the seams in the cuff. Then I embroidered a design to dress them up a bit. No cost upcyling - just scraps.
I haven't made a lot of table linens for the hope chest, but this is a small everyday tablecloth that matches Abby's pretty white dishes. The fabric was purchased in the home decor section of our local fabric store and then just hemmed around the edges. Very simple sewing.
Miss Abigail has grown up on a sheep farm, so I am happy to include these two "sheepy" tea towels. The green one was brought back from Scotland by Miss Isobel, one of our dear club ladies. You might remember the embroidered daisy towels from the running-stitch daisy dishtowels post.
Physical stress. As I mentioned before, physical folding is probably the greatest cause of distress for stored fabric over time. Fibers are weakened at the point of the crease. But, as folding is also necessary, some techniques can be used to reduce this stress.

Acid-free tissue paper can be used inside the folds to prevent creases from forming. If possible, every so often, folded textiles can be removed from storage and refolded in different directions to allow for a more even wear on the piece. The fabrics will also suffer from the physical weight of stacking, increasing the likelihood of sharp creases. Rotating the stack as you examine and refold the stored items will help relieve this pressure on any one piece.

For smaller pieces, rolled storage is the best option. Wrap a discarded paper towel tube (or a wrapping paper tube) with aluminum foil, covering the cardboard completely. This prevents the fabric from making contact the acidic cardboard. Roll the textile around the tube and tie with a wide flat ribbon.

Climate. Heat and humidity also cause deterioration to fabrics. We cannot adopt climate control as the museums do, but we can keep the hope chest within our normal household conditions, where extremes in temperature or humidity won't cause damage over time.

Find a good place within your home to store your hope chest treasures Look for space in a spare bedroom or closet where the household climate is more consistent and less extreme. Avoid the attic, garage or basement if possible.

Within the hope chest itself, textiles should never be sealed in plastic, which may promote the growth of mold or mildew. Mildew and mold will stain and weaken the fibers of the fabric. We live in a very dry climate so humidity isn't a problem for me. Silica gel crystals may help in humid climates, but these crystals should not be placed in direct contact with the textiles. Wrap them in an old handkerchief or place in a little muslin bag before placing in the hope chest. The bag should be checked over time to make sure the crystals are still effective.

Those of you who do live in a humid climate might have other suggestions. Please comment and help us all out.

Pests. Pests are of obvious concern for our stored treasures because they cause significant damage if ignored. Good housekeeping helps prevent some damage and watching for infestations helps us keep on top of things.

Keep the storage container itself clean, as well as the surrounding environment. This is the best method for preventing trouble as pests are known to be attracted to a dirty environment. In all cases, chemical means of pest control, such as moth balls, really should be avoided. Chemicals are not only harmful to those who come in contact with them, but the chemicals themselves may cause damage to the very textiles we want to save. In a severe infestation, professional help could be contacted.

Various herbs have been used throughout history to help repel insect pests. The regrettable truth is that herbs are simply not as effective at deterring pests as poison is, but we do have a choice to protect our health above all else. So I use herbal sachets in the hope chest and try to change them out to keep them fresh. There is little scientific evidence to support their use, but plenty of historical precedent urges me to use them anyway!

Traditional moth herbs are southernwood, sweet annie, wormwood and tarragon. Cedar and lavender are also effective and smell lovely. Other herbs such as lemon verbena, french marigold, coriander, pyrethrum and pennyroyal are also useful in a moth sachet. Just combine any of these herbs in a loosely woven bag and place it among your linens.

Another tip to preventing pests is to practice good hope chest housekeeping. A regular routine is not only prudent but also a delight as you look in on all the beautiful things you have stored. Pests typically love darkness and close quarters, so airing your linens now and then is a good idea. This is another historical practice that still has relevance today. Open up the hope chest and pull out all the pretty things you have stored. Give them all a good shake and check the cracks and crevices for signs of damage. This disturbs any insect life and helps any infestation to be detected and dealt with. Refold the linens, changing the positions of the folds to relieve the tension on the fabric. Then refresh or replace your sachets. You are good to go for another period of time.

Cleanliness. It goes without saying that any fabric item going into storage should be clean. Our hands contain oils and acids in the skin and by the time we are finished with a project, it is soiled. It may not look dirty and we may have been careful, but we still need to clean it. Over time, these acids and oils can stain or weaken the fibers of the fabric. Dust particles can abrade the fabric. Don't store any items in the hope chest that aren't completely clean. If you do press an item before storage, don't use starch or any other additive to the fabric. Silverfish thrive on starch and other pests may be attracted to the fragrance of laundry additives like fabric softener and dryer sheets.

As you begin a project for the hope chest, always begin with clean hands. Keep your surroundings clean also. Don't eat while you work and be careful of spilled drinks. Keeping the project clean from the beginning will help avoid stains and trouble with washing later.

If appropriate, wash your project by hand in running tepid water. You could use a small amount (pea-sized) of Dawn dish soap rubbed into the palm of your hand and then squeezed gently through the fabric. I also like a product called Eucalan, a no-rinse, delicate hand wash detergent. Gently wash the item, don't scrub or scrunch. Rinse, gently but thoroughly, swishing in tepid water until no suds are noticed. Squeeze the water out, but don't wring it. Place the item on a terry towel and roll it up. Squeeze again until most of the water is removed. Place the project flat to dry. Larger projects can be machine washed as normal, but separate from regularly soiled laundry. Don't add the usual softeners.

Conservators say not to iron textiles that go into storage, but I can't help myself. I want things to look nicely finished and ironing does that. However, use the coolest iron possible and don't iron in any creases. These creases will form naturally over time, but we certainly don't need to add them in!

Be cautious with the cleanliness of other items that might be added into the hope chest. Books and especially heirlooms that are a bit grimy can soil any items that are next to it. So take precautions to clean these items or wrap them before adding them into the collection.

The most important factor in the
deterioration of fabric is always the surroundings or conditions in
which they are stored. The physical stress of folding a textile is
possibly the greatest contributing factor, but light, humidity and
temperature also play a role. Pollutants such as the chemicals which
may be present in the manufacture of the fabric and other damaging
airborne pollutants such as cigarette smoke are also harmful to
fabrics, causing discoloration or weakness in the fibers. Pests, such
as moths, silverfish, carpet beetles and rodents, are another obvious
threat. If we practice a little hope chest housekeeping, we can reduce the possible deterioration of our stored items.

This week I am sharing a series of posts discussing several conditions that affect the storage of linens and other items we might have in a hope chest. The first of these elements is the container itself.

A Box. In the first
place, a large, strong box or container offers physical protection to all the lovely items
one might collect for the hope chest. It doesn't need to be the
traditional cedar chest to be useful or effective. A trunk or crate,
a wooden chest of drawers, even a large opaque plastic tub would
serve to physically protect the contents from the outside
environment. My own hope chest was a cardboard apple box that my ingenious mother crafted to hold my things. Some further details apply for effective and safe storage of your treasured items.

Light. The fibers in fabric suffer under prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light, especially sunlight. So storing your textiles in darkness will help preserve the integrity of the fibers as well as the pretty colors. The container of your choice should be opaque to prevent fading.

Strength. Hope chest items are heavy and, when stored together, are massively heavy. One instinctively feels that fabric is light in weight, but a stack of folded fabric is actually quite heavy. Whatever physical container you choose must be strong and able to stand up under the weight of the items you collect. Dishes, books, tools and other heavy items should be stored separately in a smaller, strong container.

Acid. Wood, cardboard and most paper is acidic and acid is especially damaging to textiles. While a cedar chest could be helpful in deterring some pests, the wood itself is toxic especially to cotton and linen. So for maximum preservation in a long-term storage situation, textiles should not come into direct contact with wood or with regular paper such as cardboard. Our pretty textiles can be wrapped in a clean white cloth, such as an old sheet or pillowcase, or in a common muslin bag to help protect them from the staining that can occur if they lay next to an acidic surface. I have made pretty wrappings for Miss Abigail's textiles to help organize them in sets and to protect them from acid within her wooden hope chest.

Miss Abigail has a traditional hope chest in the form of a wooden box. However, it is nontraditional in that is is not made of cedar wood. When I asked our son to build Abby's chest I specifically asked him not to use cedar. Cedar does work to repel bugs in wool fiber, but it also yellows and actually deteriorates fabric over time and it can be truly lethal to photographs. Pine is a wood with resins that repel bugs also, it is just not as strong as cedar. So Cameron made Abby's box with pine.
Abigail also has an "auxilary" hope chest. This is a sturdy, antique wooden chest of drawers that I purchased at the estate sale of a dear friend. It can serve Abby as a nice piece of practical furniture in her future home. Two other large plastic tubs hold additional items and various cardboard boxes are in closets around the house.

So, a cardboard box is not ideal because it is not as strong and is acidic. A plastic tote is not ideal because it out-gases and traps humidity. Even a cedar chest, or other wooden chest is not ideal because it also is acidic and, over time, stains and damages the very fabric it is designed to protect. But much in our life is not ideal right? We simply recognize that we are not a museum and are limited to what we can do within a household. We can also remember that the items we create will serve an everyday purpose within a limited number of years, in spite of stains and damage. But there are ways that we can lessen the effects of time through good housekeeping and smart storage.

So stay tuned for more in this series discussing smart storage. Cleanliness. Climate. Pests. Physical Stress.

Miss Doris was a longtime member of the Stanley Homemakers Club - the women's club that Abigail was born into. Doris contributed several things to Abigail's hope chest over the years. She was an expert at hand embroidery and made several sets of dishtowels for Abby.

This picture was taken in 2011 when Abby was 13 years old. Doris was such a friend to me and spoiled Abby as much as she could. Doris passed away a few days ago from the consequence of age and, while I am happy that she is released from this life and joins her beloved J.C., I am also sad to live in a world without her in it. She was truly a homemaker and I'm so glad Abby has so many things in her hope chest that will remind her of memories of Miss Doris.

I am making coordinating aprons for this kitchen set. This pretty floral apron will be Abigail's. I honestly love this pattern! It is called "Sassy Little Apron" by Cabbage Rose. My favorite feature is the contrasting bias ruffle - I love the drape! I also really like the facing feature that saves me from having to hem around such a large area - nice. I used this pattern for the apron in the Thanksgiving set also - there you can see a much younger Miss Abigail modeling this pattern.
