This is a cameo pin that belonged to my grandmother Aurora Kathinka Burke Bunnell. It is beautiful and I'm so glad that it came down to me. Heirlooms are wonderful aren't they? I think it is lovely that I have a few heirlooms to put in Miss Abigail's hope chest.

That's a beautiful cameo, Kathleen. The lady looks very Grecian. Do you know its history -- whether it was a gift to your grandmother (and from whom) or whether she purchased it? (Did ladies in those days buy jewelry like this for themselves?)
ReplyDeleteNancy, the cameo was a gift to her from my Aunt who traveled in Europe frequently. I think it came from Italy. Thanks for the reminder to check with my Aunt. I was in the right place at the right time for the cameo to come to me. I am so glad to have it.
DeleteIt is very pretty! I love heirlooms and wish there were more in my family. I didn't get to know my maternal grandmother and when I met her for the first time that I can remember I was 14 and she already had Alzheimers. Later though, when I learned how to tat I posted something I made on facebook and one of my mom's sisters said my grandmother would have been so proud. She said I was so much like her. She mailed me a little baby shoe made out of tatted lace. It wasn't finished so it was packed away somewhere to be finished later. I cherish this little piece of my history including the fact that she taught my mom how to crochet and then she taught my sister and my sister taught me.
ReplyDeleteWhat a treasure to have a little bit of tatting from your grandmother! I think skills like tatting and crochet are heirlooms in themselves, especially when learned from another family member!
