Brown Twist Dishcloths

I recently completed these dishcloths to go into the brown and aqua “Utensils” hope chest kitchen set. I spied the soft brown cotton twist yarn in the craft store when Miss Abigail and I were shopping for yarn for her 4-H knitting project. I tried to talk her into using this for her project, but she had other ideas. So, I bought it for myself. The brand is "I Love This Cotton" and I really did enjoy working with it. It just felt good in my hands! I liked that this particular multi-colored twist seemed a bit thinner than the usual worsted weight cotton yarn. It worked up more like sport-weight, even though the size is listed as 4. This meant that I could use a stitch for a solid crochet fabric, but still have a dishcloth that is not quite so thick. I used the the Seed stitch in a simple square and then put a semi-detached scalloped border around the edge. I made two dishcloths out of the 3 oz. skein and had about 2 yds of yarn left at the end -just barely enough!

I’ll try to work the pattern again, do some math and compose the directions and then I can share. That just means that I’ll end up with two more dishcloths! ;o)

  2. I like that shade of brown, too. That would go really nice with pale pink or aquas :) :) Love and hugs from the ocean shores of California, Heather :)

  3. I just love crocheted dishclothes. They are the best. I love them and they make the best gifts, too! What a pretty shade of yarn, I have not seen that where I get my cotton worsted yarn? Do you remember what brand it is? I would love to buy some.
    Blessings,
    Susie

    1. Susie, the brand is "I Love This Cotton" - I know, it is an odd name - it sounds as if I am are describing it rather than naming it! They make solid colors as well, but the solids seem thicker to me than the twists. I purchased the yarn at Hobby Lobby.

  4. I just found your delightful blog from a mention at Alison's Brocante Home. I started a Hope Chest for my own daughter some years ago, but it has been a little forgotten recently. Thank you for inspiring me to go and check through it and get started on something new for her. I recently picked up a beautiful set of 10 tea plates with two serving dishes that were just too beautiful to resist in a thriftshop closing down sale...but I do not need them at all. So you know where they are going! Also a nearly new and seemingly unused Julia Child's French Kitchen cookbook.
Thank you for posting so many lovely patterns and links. My crochet hook is twitching to get started! I shall look forwards to seeing your new pattern.

    1. So glad to offer a little nudge, Gill! ;o) The tea plates sound beautiful - thrift stores and antique stores are great resources for the hope chest.

  5. I think the information shared in this blog is great. I am a girl in my twenties and I love tradition. It saddens me that so much of who we are and where we come from is forgotten. My family has always valued homemade items. It was an urge to preserve and share this that recently inspired me to start my own blog, http://handcraftedholidayscrafts.blogspot.com/

I recently just posted about crochet washcloths and I think they are an amazing gift to yourself and others. I love the patterns you provided and I cant wait to try some of the things I've seen here.

  6. I raced down to Hobby Lobby the minute I saw this beautiful dishcloth! They didn't have your brown color, but "I Love This Cotton" was on sale for $2.66 per skein, so I picked up some cute colors to try out. You are right about how it feels... so soft and smooth... just luscious! My daughter has been wanting me to make her some face cloths - this might be perfect!

I made a few experimental dishrags last August (http://deborahrah.blogspot.com/2012/08/totally-hooked.html) and since then, have been searching for the perfect pattern to use. I like that "seed pattern", but find that it differs from person to person, so I look forward to your tutorial Kathleen!

Thank you for continuing to have such a beautiful blog... it has such a calming affect on me... All my best, Debbie
